By late 1959, the big bang that spawned the birth of Rock & Roll was nothing more than a distant echo. Elvis was in the Army, Little Richard enterered the Seminary, Jerry Lee Lewis faded away in disgrace and Chuck Berry was in jail. The wild, insolent rockers were replaced by polite, well-dressed teen-idols.

It was during the crucial period (1960-63) that Phil Spector re-invented the sound of the pop music single with his Wall of Sound. His massive orchestral-like productions gave the songs a distinctive sound that he later called “little symphonies for the kids.”
