NEW HAVEN >> Submitted for your approval: long days, warm weather and the start of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, which bursts out of the starting gate with a two-night commission of 1990s music by Taylor Mac beginning tonight, a family-friendly slate Saturday and Sunday that includes Dan Zanes on the New Haven Green (see artidea.org) and a free headline concert Saturday on the Green’s big stage starring Darlene Love.

That’s 2015 Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love, who is a music legend at 73 and working as hard as ever (she gets up at 5 a.m. to kickbox for conditioning, she says). She credits David Letterman for recharging part of her career, but the rest is that golden voice.

Love went from Phil Spector’s singer of “He’s a Rebel” (credited to the Crystals because Spector was trying to upstage a competing version by Vicki Carr) to some success with other singles and an on-and-off career as an A-list sessions singer who had to overcome obstacles to keep her career going.

Love doesn’t hold a grudge for Spector’s machinations or the ups and downs.
