So So Gay sat down with the legend to talk about Andy Murray, Adele, the Oscars and working with the biggest names in pop music.
What are you doing these days ?
After the Academy Awards, I didn’t have time to celebrate that much. I went right back to work, I went to Palm Springs for three months: that’s why I missed all this bad weather in New York. And often had to go up to Los Angeles. I’ve been working steadily. Next week, I head to Australia for ten days, so it’s non-stop and I’m loving every minute of it. I often tell people I’m able to work, I enjoy what I’m doing, I enjoy making my audience happy and as long as I can do it, I will. It’s been non-stop and I am so grateful.
How did it feel to reunite with The Blossoms in 20 Feet From Stardom?
Oh wow. That was amazing, it came as a complete surprise to me because I didn’t know they were going to show up. The producers surprised me with that. We were at the studios we had recorded at years ago and when they walked in, I screamed at the top of my lungs, ‘Are you kidding me?!’ And then when he said, ‘Can you guys do a little something for us?’ , I said, ‘OK, well let’s do ‘Da Do Run Run’, it’s probably the easiest thing to do. I started singing, and how would you know that they’re so professional that they all came in on the right part? It was one take, we did it in one take – everyone was singing where everyone was, where they were meant to be singing and it let me know that in my heart they were talented and they are talented. It was great, we had a good time that day. We were there for a few hours, but you couldn’t put all of that in the film. We had a really great time.
