A rock ‘n’ roll beach party came to Asbury Park on Tuesday, July 28.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Darlene Love filmed a music video for a new song Tuesday, July 28 at the 3rd Avenue beach in Asbury Park. The shoot also included street scenes featuring her in a 1961 Cadillac convertible.

The public was invited to dance or just be a part of the scene on the beach.

“It’s very cool,” said John Cavanaugh, house photographer for the city’s Stone Pony. “We’ve adopted her to Asbury Park with all the shows she’s done with (show promoter) Sammy Boyd and the other venues in town. Everybody’s getting pretty excited and it’s another feather in the cap of Asbury Park.”

Filming on the beach stage scene did not begin until after 6 p.m. By then a cooling breeze took some of the heat off, Cavanaugh said.

Joan Jett, Paul Shaffer and Maureen Van Zandt participated in the shoot for the song “Forbidden Nights,” an Elvis Costello composition.

The track is from the upcoming Steven Van Zandt-produced album, “Introducing Darlene Love,” which will be released in September on Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool label and will be distributed by Columbia Records. The album will also feature songs written by Jett, Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

Love will play the city’s Paramount Theatre on September 12 accompanied by Van Zandt and the musicians who played on the new album. (Click here to continue reading this article)
