Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is a modern classic and one of the very few holiday songs that is not only beloved by many, but also hasn’t been covered to death. (We don’t consider one catchy Mariah Careyversion “covered to death.”) In fact, Rolling Stone named it one of the greatest rock ’n’ roll Christmas songs of all time. David Letterman seems to agree, because ever since 1986, he has invited Love to perform the swingy Motown hit on the last episode of his show before December 25. It’s become a big holiday tradition for both Letterman and CBS. In honor of that tradition, Love has said she will retire the song from television after Letterman retires.
