It’s not Christmas without Love (Darlene Love, that is)
Darlene Love knows exactly where she will be the afternoon of Dec. 19: New York City, at the Ed Sullivan Theatre, taping “Late Night with David Letterman” and singing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” It will be her 28th straight year doing this. (The show airs the following night.)
Love wouldn’t miss this gig for the world. Letterman has played a key part in her renaissance and keeping her in the public eye.
“Darlene is a good friend and a fantastic singer who is a deserved member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” says Letterman through a representative. “She’s one of my favorite things about the holiday season. It isn’t Christmas without Darlene Love.”
And then there was this year’s surprise hit documentary, “20 Feet From Stardom,” about the largely unheralded world of background singers. Love’s own roller-coaster ride was one of the main threads of the film. Her autobiography, “My Name Is Love,” was re-published in June…
I was in the Ed Sullivan Theater for the taping last night. It sounded great and Darlene did her usual unbelievable job. I hope she gets to sing that song for at least another 28 years. God Bless all and have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year.
